The City of Livermore is currently accepting applications for the position of Traffic Signal Technician Trainee. Please refer to the job announcement for more information.DEFINITION Under direct supervision, receives instruction in and performs a variety of tasks involving maintenance, repair, modification, inspection and testing of street lighting and traffic signal systems and equipment; and performs other duties as assigned. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This entry-level classification in the Traffic Signal Technician series is assigned to the Maintenance Services Division in the Streets Maintenance Section and is distinguished from other maintenance classifications in the division by the specialized duties and knowledge required of the position. This classification was designed to provide on-the-job training to prepare incumbents for progression into the journey-level classification of Traffic Signal Technician, which requires a greater degree of specialized knowledge and duties. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Direct supervision is provided by the Public Services Supervisor, and direction is provided by Traffic Signal Technicians. Work assignments and supervision may also be provided by the division manager. SUPERVISION EXERCISED None.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Maintenance FunctionsReceives training and direction and assists with and/or performs maintenance and repairs on street lighting, traffic signal, and equipment; assists with electrical system wiring and installations; replaces lights, lamps, ballasts, and fixtures; assists with and/or performs preventative maintenance inspections and repairs on street lighting and traffic signals; may assist with locating underground utilities; responds to emergencies or reported malfunctions, such as pole knockdowns or traffic signal problems; and provides assistance at special events. Administrative FunctionsAssists in the coordination of projects and tasks; assists with monitoring projects to keep the Public Works Supervisor and Traffic Signal Technicians informed of progress; maintains written and computerized records; writes reports and creates spreadsheets related to street lighting or traffic signal maintenance and repairs; orders and maintains inventory of required materials; and uses phone and e-mail to communicate with City staff and the general public.
