- The Glenview Public Library is seeing an enthusiastic and innovative Youth Services Community Engagement Librarian to join our team. This position offers an exciting opportunity to provide vital resources and dynamic programming for Glenview’s elementary student community.
- About the Role
- The Youth Community Engagement Librarian is responsible for strategizing, directing, developing, and implementing engaging developmentally appropriate youth programs and activities inside and outside the Library that encourage literacy, learning, and discovery. This position requires active and enthusiastic engagement with children, teens, caregivers, educators, and community partners to build positive relationships, create a welcoming library environment and connect patrons to library resources through reference and readers advisory services.
- The pay range for this position is $27.53/hour to $28.00/hour. Offers are made within this range based on competencies, experience, and internal equity.
- What You’ll Get to Do
- · Develop and implement internal library programs for children in kindergarten through fifth grade and their families.
- · Partner with our School Services Librarian to provide services and outreach for local elementary schools, including but not limited to, hosting reading program booster presentations, fulfilling teacher book bag requests, and attending school and community outreach events.
- · Lead literacy initiatives, including supporting emergent reading through current research and participate in the coordination of the Battle of the Books program.
- · Provide a warm, energetic presence in Youth Services by guiding children with reference and reader’s advisory support while curating engaging experiences in the Play Space.
- · Works predominantly with planning and executing programs and/or outreach activities that connect with the youth-focused community
- · Actively promotes library resources, programs, and services to youth and families
- · May engage with youth-focused community organizations by attending meetings, task forces, or committees to increase awareness and demand for library services
- · Provides program and outreach promotional information for the library’s website, social media channels, and newsletters

- What You’ll Bring to the Role
- Education/Experience/Qualifications
- · Bachelor’s degree required.
- · Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree from an ALA-accredited program, or substantial progress toward completion with graduation anticipated within one year.
- · A Masters in Education, Instructional Technology, or another closely related field may be considered in lieu of the MLIS, depending on experience.
- · In lieu of a master's degree, a candidate with a minimum of 5 years of professional library experience working with a similar audience or in a comparable role would be considered.
- Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- · Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to maintain and foster cooperative, courteous working relationships with a multicultural/multigenerational staff and patron population
- · Knowledge of products, services, and current trends and issues in library practices for youth
- · Knowledge of and interest in media, fiction, and nonfiction materials for youth
- · Successfully handles multiple tasks and projects simultaneously
- · Can listen, analyze, problem solve, and exercise good judgment when handling both routine and non-routine issues
- · Works independently and prioritizes tasks to meet deadlines
- · Adaptable to changes in existing practices, library routines, and workflows
- · Can operate a personal computer; has knowledge of ILS software, email, Windows, Excel, and basic word processing functions
- · Ability to learn and to instruct others, and perform basic troubleshooting on a variety of library technologies
- · Available to work evenings and weekends as needed.
