Description of Work This is a repost and all previous applicants must reapply to be considered This is a Transportation Worker II position located in Alamance County Bridge Maintenance. This work is very physical and labor intense. Work includes, but not limited to, pipe installation, installing erosion control devices, trenching, and shoring operations, structure inspection, welding, pile driving, steel fabrication and steel beam repair, driving spikes, installing traffic control, flagging, and operation of heavy equipment in work zones as assigned by supervisor. Work also includes carpentry, concrete work, machine operation, contract inspection, sandblasting/painting, demolition work, lead paint removal, operating a variety of hand and power tools, clearing right of way, and repairing pavement. Work is being performed in the roadway or on the shoulder adjacent to the traveling public in heavy traffic at interstate speeds, near heavy equipment. Working safely and following instructions to complete assigned tasks is a condition of employment. Use of tools associated with related Bridge maintenance and/or construction activities. Employee must be able to operate medium dump truck safely. Skill in the safe use & care of assigned equipment, hand & power tools, & perform manual maintenance duties & other duties as directed by supervisor. Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC05 $32,639 - $57,117 Management prefers applicants with the following: Experience in pipe installation and installation of erosion control devices Experience in layout of traffic control in work zones Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, asphalt patching, or snow and ice removal Experience in at least two pieces of Bridge Category B equipment (asphalt distributor, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, ditching machine, force feed loader, front end loader, lube truck, asphalt maintainer, post driver, skid steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck, tractor “A” boom mower, truck w/ aerial device) Experience constructing formwork using skilled carpentry techniques Additional Expectations: This position is subject to Emergency Call Back and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances, which includes responding to emergencies such as snow and ice removal, downed trees, etc. This job will require work to be performed while suspended at moderate heights, confined areas, over water, in water, in extreme heat and cold, and during inclement weather. May require work during non-traditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. The ability to exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/ or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/ or in excess of 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Safety toe footwear is required within 30 days of employment. Employee must have ability to act upon both verbal & written communication. Employee must have ability to traverse steep & uneven terrain. Employee must have ability to lift 50 lbs. Employee must be able to work in extreme temperature conditions. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate Class A CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions and have a Tanker (N) endorsement at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation. High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Requirements Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
