Description of Work This position is for Transportation Worker II in the Columbus County Maintenance Unit. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair and construction of State maintained roads and road features. Work will include pipe installation, shoulder and ditch maintenance, asphalt pavement repair, installation of traffic control devices, installation of erosion control devices, operating various pieces of hand, and power tools. This position will operate equipment such as a backhoe, track hoe, front loader and dump truck. Work may require lifting up to 50 lbs. repeatedly and traverse uneven slopes. Employee will be subject to extreme environmental conditions, and other hazards at highway construction sites, such as equipment and traffic. This position is subject to emergency callback and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other circumstances. Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences Salary grade and range: NC05 $32,639 - $57,117 Management prefers applicants with the following: Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures. Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, or asphalt patching. Knowledge of Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace policies and procedures. Experience in snow and ice removal operations. Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper. Employee will be expected to promote a safe work environment. Ability to maintain working knowledge of all maintenance operating procedures. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Employee will be expected to maintain effective working relations with other employees and the general public. Ability to perform quantity calculations. Employee will be expected to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. Safety toe shoes required. Class A CDL with N endorsements required. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Pre-employment drug testing required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. High school or General Educational Development diploma and (3) three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Requirements: Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
