Description of Work The Server Administrator provides primary and secondary support for the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) Information Technology Division’s Microsoft Windows Server systems, virtual server environment, and associated applications. This role involves system administration, performance monitoring, security enhancement, and troubleshooting to ensure optimal system functionality. The administrator also manages system updates, digital certificate configurations, and change and configuration management, while supporting IT projects related to system upgrades and application support. The Server Administrator plays a vital role in maintaining reliable IT infrastructure by leveraging virtualization and cloud technologies to optimize performance and scalability. By proactively addressing security risks and implementing automation strategies, the administrator ensures system resilience and security. The position requires continuous learning to stay current with emerging technologies, fostering innovation and efficiency while upholding best practices in system administration and support. Key Duties Include: • Administer Microsoft Windows Server systems and virtual server components, including performance monitoring and capacity management. • Respond to system alerts, troubleshoot issues, and perform remediation to maintain optimal functionality. • Implement system updates, patches, security enhancements, and digital certificate management. • Manage, monitor and support a high-availability virtual infrastructure, including VMware ESXi and VCenter platforms. • Manage and maintain server endpoint security and monitoring solutions. • Support cloud environment operations, including provisioning and configuration on platforms like AWS and Azure. • Lead system upgrades, improvements, and project initiatives as directed by the Network Manager • Develop documentation for system configurations, maintenance procedures, and performance monitoring. • Ensure system availability, integrity, and performance by monitoring server and storage systems. • Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues and provide consultation on system architecture and performance optimization. • Research, test and implement solutions for security vulnerability findings. Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences Salary Grade Range: $72,993.00 - $109,490.00 Recruitment Range: $72,933.00 - $105,787.00 Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement. The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred: Hands-on experience managing Microsoft Windows Server environments, including system monitoring, software upgrades, security patching, and leading IT projects as a technical escalation point for complex issues. Practical experience working with VMware technologies such as ESXi and vCenter, including high-availability configurations, proactive system monitoring, capacity planning, and patch management. Experience implementing and supporting infrastructure in public cloud platforms like AWS or Microsoft Azure, including server, storage, and network configuration, monitoring, and troubleshooting. Direct experience with Linux server administration and operational support, including working within help desk ticketing systems such as ServiceNow, Jira, or Salesforce to manage and resolve technical issues. Experience using enterprise tools for data backup, system monitoring, endpoint management, and security alerting to maintain system integrity and operational readiness. Current certifications in Microsoft Server, VMware, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Azure, or Linux. Physical Requirement: Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. Able to sit for extended periods of time.
