JOB DESCRIPTION
- Conducts innovative scientific investigation by developing theories and devising scientific methods and procedures to apply scientific principles, theories and research in projects related to the mission of UTMB. Committed to the discovery of new innovative biomedical and health services knowledge leading to increasingly effective and accessible health care. Has full technical responsibility for interpreting, organizing, executing, and coordinating overall project assignments.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Identifies and assesses feasibility and significance of research projects.
- Establishes research objectives and methodology, and designs procedures requiring a highly developed technical skill.
- Conducts research projects and performs analysis and interpretation of data.
- May be responsible for leading proof-of-concept in vitro and animal studies, including preparation of protocols and reports.
- May be responsible for conducting bio sample analysis on regulated nonclinical studies, including participation in or responsibility for preparation of Contributing Scientist Reports.
- Works with Principal Investigator and/or Study Director on development of required biosafety approvals, animal protocols and study protocols.
- Defines problems and possible solutions as dictated by the research project.
- Complies, writes, and effectively communicates project results to the Principal Investigator and/or Study Director.
- Manages all aspects of the lab, including staffing, staff development, safety training, and all applicable policies, laws, and regulations.
- Assists in preparation of technical proposals and detailed project budgets in response to a sponsor-defined Statement of Work and/or Request for Proposals
- May submit training grants as Principal Investigator (PI), provided they have a faculty mentor.
- May publish and present research and works independently as First/Senior author on publications.
- Ensures proper training of Classified Research staff and Post Doctoral Fellows.
- Designs, develops, and maintains equipment used in experiments or research to obtain desired results, including necessary record keeping related to equipment operation, maintenance and calibration.
- May submit equipment, renovation, or other facility/core enhancement grants as the Principal Investigator.
- Reviews scientific literature.
- Identifies and complies with appropriate internal controls for department, including compliance with GLP-based research quality system for regulated non-clinical studies.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Ph. D, M.D, D.O., or D.V.M in related field and six years of related experience with Peer Review Publications.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Prior BSL3 and/or BSL4 experience is highly preferred. Successful candidate will be required to work in BSL4 laboratories.
- Prior registration with the US FSAP and experience working with select agents.
- Prior training in and/or experience working under GLP or GLP-based quality systems.
SALARY
- Commensurate with experience.
