  • Reports To: Sr Operations Manager
  • Position Summary
  • HCPA is a Title I Charter School that serves students through a school-wide plan for instruction that is focused on the needs of at-risk students. The School Nurse is responsible for identifying and treating student health concerns and referring students to appropriate resources as need.
  • Responsibilities
  • Manage the care of individual students with special health needs through assessment, planning, assurance and evaluation.
  • Provide nursing care and physical screening to students, assess students and implement first aid measures for students as needed.
  • Develop and implement individual health and emergency health plans
  • Assist students and families in obtaining health care in the community by referral to appropriate providers and agencies.
  • Works closely with the special education team to ensure all IEP’s are up to date and all evaluations are submitted on time
  • Provides guidance and counseling in the area of health to students, staff, and parents according to professional standards.
  • Reports all cases of diagnosed or suspected communicable disease to the necessary agencies.
  • Act as liaison between families, staff, health care providers, and community agencies regarding students’ health needs.
  • Reports environmental conditions which may adversely affect the safety and health of the students and staff.
  • Maintain & review student health records to identify & interpret present and potential health problems to staff.
  • Participate in the establishment of health-related protocols and policies.
  • Maintain an inventory of health room supplies
  • Complete required annual reports.

Supervise student activities, which may include

  • o Bus duty – assist with walking students to the busses at the end of the day
  • o Breakfast and/or lunch duty – assist with monitoring based on a rotational schedule
  • Performs other duties non-instruction health-related duties and responsibilities as assigned

  • Establishes and maintains effective and cooperative relationships with students, parents, teachers, and other school staff.
  • Responds appropriately and promptly to parent, student, and staff member needs.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality regarding students and the educational setting.

  • Requirements
  • Required Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse with a Bachelor’s degree in nursing
  • 1-2 years of experience working in a school setting; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • License as a Public School Nurse from Minnesota Department of Education.
  • License as a Professional Registered Nurse by Minnesota Board of Nursing
  • Certified as a Public Health Nurse (PHN) by Minnesota Board of Nursing
  • Current CPR Certification for the Healthcare Professional and current Frist Aid Certification.
  • Knowledge of State and Federal laws and regulatory issues governing public health, including rules and regulations of the Minnesota Department of Health and other governing agencies.
  • Knowledge of Public health and safety protocols and regional healthcare issues.
  • Knowledge of Nutrition and health maintenance issues for students
  • Knowledge to interpret medical information and provide school staff with an understanding of student health needs in the school environment and during other school activities
  • Knowledge of child and adolescent development (physical, cognitive, behavioral, and emotional) and ability to use this information to provide staff with insight to support student health needs.
  • Strong interpersonal skills - the ability to work effectively with students, parents, district staff and community members from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills; ability to multi-task.
  • Knowledge of the programs, functions, and procedures of a school setting.
  • Ability to remain calm in emergency and stressful situations.
  • Ability to exercise initiative and sound and effective judgment within established guidelines.
  • Other information
  • Transcript - Unofficial transcripts are accepted at the time of hire. You must submit official transcripts within 30 days of your start date. Formal credential evaluation is required for post-secondary education completed outside of the United States.
  • Work Environment/Conditions
  • Duties are normally performed in a school/classroom environment; school building is a multi-level building that has an elevator and is accessible.
  • Position requires extensive interaction with children of all ages.
  • Possible exposure to loud and noisy locations (e.g. loud classrooms or cafeterias; children speaking or laughing loudly).
  • Operate standard equipment (computer, fax machine, telephone, copier machines, etc.).
  • Fast-paced environment.
  • Requires frequent keyboarding which calls for repetitive motion and rapid eye movements, frequent use of the telephone.
  • Position requires the ability to sit for extended periods of time, ability to push, reach, or bend.
  • Work may require weekend and/or evening work and some travel may be required.
