  • Position Title: Phlebotomist (Clinical Laboratory Assistant)
  • Department: Laboratory
  • Reports To: Laboratory Director
  • FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Job Summary

  • Under general supervision of the Lab Manager, the technician assumes the responsibility for performing phlebotomy appropriately and efficiently, under the philosophy, policies and procedures established by the hospital and the laboratory department. To assure that the highest degree of quality patient care is maintained at all times, the technician should be able to demonstrate skill and accuracy in obtaining specimens for all age groups serviced; maintain inter and intra departmental communications via telephone, fax, and reception desk; maintain effective and cooperative relationships with other personnel throughout the hospital; observe safety, infection control, and risk management policies and procedures; participate in continuing education programs and related professional activities; perform any duties and functions necessary to the efficient and quality operation of the department; controls supply usage; and demonstrates computer skills. Additionally, the lab assistant is to assist in the operation and preventative maintenance of laboratory equipment and perform other duties as directed by the CLS on duty.

Education, Training and Licenses Required

  • • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • • Current CPT License for State of California.

Experience Required

  • • 1-2 years Phlebotomy experience preferred
  • • Acute care setting experience preferred

Skills, Abilities, and Knowledge

  • • Certain level of retention.
  • • Command of English language,
  • • Computer skills,
  • • Phlebotomy.
  • • Operate minimal level analyzers.

Working Conditions (Noise, Environmental, Demands, Shift, Setting, Human Interface, etc.)

  • Inside – Worker spends approximately 100% of time inside. Inside work has good ventilation and usually comfortable temperatures. Employee must understand that we operate 24/7 and they may be called on to adjust schedule according to the needs of the lab. Exposure to biohazard agents.

Safety Requirements

  • • Maintains a clean, neat, and organized work area. Ensures work surfaces are disinfected each shift, and whenever visible
  • blood, etc. is present.
  • • Follows universal precautions. Safely handles all specimens and chemical/reagents as dictated by hospital and laboratory
  • policies, including appropriate use of PPE. Consistently follows the laboratory Chemical Hygiene policy.
  • • Attends all required Safety Training programs and can describe his/her responsibilities related to general safety and specific
  • job-related hazards.
  • • Consistently demonstrates appropriate body mechanics to avoid injury.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the position is frequently required to do the following

  • • Stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, and stand for sustained period of time.
  • • Walk, push, pull, lift, carry objects from a lower to higher position or horizontally from position to position or otherwise move
  • objects.
  • • Feel sizes, shapes, temperatures, and textures by touching with skin, particularly that of the fingertips.
  • • Express or exchange ideas orally and potentially loudly, accurately, or quickly.
  • • Perceive the nature of sound with no less than a 40-db. loss @ 1000 Hz and 2000 Hz with or without correction.
  • • Exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently.
  • • Minimum standard of visual acuity with or without correction.
  • • While worker may possibly be subjected to temperature changes, the worker is generally not substantially exposed to adverse
  • environmental conditions as the work is predominantly inside.

Equipment Knowledge Required

  • Ability to understand functions of machines utilized in assigned departments for product evaluation and purchase. Ability to use office equipment with dexterity and A.V. equipment. Competency with the electronic documentation system must be obtained within 30 days of hire with full proficiency by 90 days of hire.
