Job Description Summary Department - Parks and Recreation Job Description OPEN TO CURRENT PIMA COUNTY EMPLOYEES ONLY Job Type: Classified Job Classification: 5656 - Parks Specialist II Salary Grade: 9 Pay Range Hiring Range: $23.61 - $28.33 Per Hour Pay Range: $23.61 - $33.05 Per Hour Range Explanation: Hiring Range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity. Pay Range is the entire compensation range for the position. The Parks Specialist II position leads three or more full-time employees in daily park maintenance activities and operates independently in providing journey-level maintenance, repair, diagnosis, trouble-shooting, construction, fabrication and preventive maintenance in a public park setting. This position requires technical skills, experience and knowledge in the area of park maintenance. Accountable for activities and ensures services or products comply with written procedures, engineering drawing, specifications, contracts, industry standards and statutory codes and requirements. Essential Functions: As defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, this classification may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. Work assignments may vary depending on the department’s need and will be communicated to the applicant or incumbent by the supervisor. Leads and oversees the daily maintenance activities of three or more Park Technician I or II or Park Helper employees, which includes: assigning work tasks and ensuring maintenance activities are completed as delegated; Performs quality control analysis on equipment, supported systems, turf management, ball field preparation, and all other park assets included in assigned property; Performs journey-level tasks of the parks and recreation specialization; Conducts on-the-job training for assigned staff and performs all essential functions of Park Technician I or II or Park Helper; Maintains comprehensive activity, operations, service and usage records on supported vehicles, equipment and systems; Prepares oral and written activity reports; Identifies common and abnormal conditions and diseases of turf grasses, trees, ornamental shrubs and directs remedial actions; Monitors contracted employee performance; Performs skilled maintenance in environmentally-sensitive locations, historic restorations, fencing, equestrian complexes, camping facilities, ponds, trails, adobe buildings, habitat restorations, erosion prevention and control of invasive species. Minimum Requirements: Completions of an industry-recognized apprenticeship program in a Parks & Recreation specialization appropriate to assigned duties AND one year of journey-level experience in the same trade, craft or operations area of required expertise. (Relevant five years of journey-level experience in the trade, craft or operational area of required expertise may substitute for completion of a recognized apprenticeship program.) OR: One (1) year experience with Pima County as a Parks Specialist I. (Relevant experience and/or education from an accredited college or university may be substituted.) Qualifying education and experience must be clearly documented in the "Education" and "Work Experience" sections of the application. Do not substitute a resume for your application or write "see resume" on your application. Preferred Qualifications: (Be specific in describing your experience in your application. Ensure the descriptions provided illustrate your competencies, specifically addressing the required and preferred qualifications.): Minimum two (2) years experience landscape/park maintenance in turf, irrigation, ball field care, plant care, vegetation management, weed identification/control, and/or playground maintenance. Minimum one (1) year experience with trail, pathway, hardscape and/or soft path maintenance (ex-asphalt, concrete, decomposed granite and earthen). Minimum one (1) year experience in general building maintenance to include plumbing, masonry, painting, light carpentry and general "handy man" duties. Minimum one (1) year experience directing, delegating, project management, contract property management (ex. apartment complex landscaping, roadway islands, etc.), working with youth sports leagues, special event representatives, the public and/or management. Minimum six (6) months supervisory experience of one or more staff. Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process. Supplemental Information: License and Certificates: Valid driver license is required at time of application. Valid AZ driver license is required at time of appointment. The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicant’s suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures. Any offer of employment resulting from this recruitment is contingent upon Fleet Services’ review and approval of the candidate’s driving record. Failure to obtain and maintain the required licenses and certifications shall be grounds for termination. Special Notice Items: The County requires pre-employment background checks. Successful candidates will receive a post-offer, pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history. A prior criminal conviction will not automatically disqualify a candidate from employment with the County.
