Job Description Summary Department - Conservation Lands and Resources Job Description OPEN TO PIMA COUNT EMPLOYEES ONLY Job Type: Classified Job Classification: 5231 - Natural Resources Superintendent Salary Grade: 16 Pay Range Hiring Range: $75,816 - $90,979 Annually Pay Range: $75,816 - $106,163 Annually Range Explanation: Hiring Range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity. Pay Range is the entire compensation range for the position. Pima County’s Conservation Lands and Resources Department is seeking highly motivated and energetic individuals to fill a position as Natural Resources Superintendent. The position works within the Natural Resources Parks and Trails Division of Conservation Lands and Resources supporting Pima County’s commitment to conservation. The position will be part of a team that delivers land stewardship and supports business processes in a fast-paced environment. This position will support the operation of natural resources parks including Tucson Mountain Park, Historic Canoa Ranch, Agua Caliente Park, as well as trails and campgrounds. Work assignments may vary depending on the department’s need and will be communicated to the applicant or incumbent by the supervisor. Provides leadership and management oversight for assigned sections and associated programs within the Conservation Lands and Resources Department, with the primary goals of managing the County’s conservation lands system and ensuring implementation of SDCP and MSCP requirements, including conservation of natural and cultural resources, resource management planning, managing and coordinating park infrastructure and operations, multi-use trails, restoration, range and agriculture, environmental education, and other major programs and projects, for assigned section(s); Develops and administers budget for assigned work section(s), approving and monitoring expenditures, taking action to ensure compliance with established budgetary processes; Researches, prepares, and administers grants and agreements, including maintaining records of expenditures and preparing reports; Develops, organizes, and administers strategic and management plans, master agreements, project plans, and assessments related to assigned section(s); Recruits, mentors, supervises, and evaluates work of subordinate staff, providing a positive working environment for employees and ensuring adherence to all county personnel policies and procedures; Responds to elected officials, county leadership, news media, and public inquiries regarding events, resolving problems, providing information and addressing pertinent issues; Manages and incorporates data in project management, resource evaluation, planning and other functional areas and ensures associated updates are incorporated into geographic information and electronic filing and retrieval systems; Establishes and maintains working liaison relationships with various watershed organizations, conservation land management partners, ranch and farm managers, parks and trails manager, local, state, and federal agencies, and non-governmental organizations, user groups and individuals, emphasizing collaborative engagement where applicable; Communicates with other County staff and external constituents, providing presentations to department and county leadership, advisory committees, professional conferences, outside constituents and partner organizations, composing written documents including formal letters, reports, permits, contracts and agreements, and other official documents. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in business or public administration, planning, natural resource recreation, civil engineering, architecture, arid lands resource sciences, landscape architecture, renewable natural resources, horticulture, agronomy, wildlife management, soil and water science or other closely related field as determined by the department head at the time of recruitment AND four years of experience in administration or supervisor of a municipal park, state or federal park, state or federal multiple use area, natural area parks sports complex, resources preserve, wilderness preserve, planning or maintenance operations. (Relevant experience and/or education from an accredited college or university may be substituted.) OR: Four years of experience with Pima County as a Park Supervisor, Park Manager, Program Manager or other leadership role supervising staff as determined by the department head at time of recruitment. Ensure the descriptions provided illustrate your competencies, specifically addressing the required and preferred qualifications.): Minimum two (2) years experience with operations and maintenance of natural resources parks in a supervisory role. Minimum two (2) years experience with habitat restoration. Minimum two (2) years experience with maintaining and operating historic buildings and landscapes in coordination with cultural resource experts. Experience using computer systems such as interactive, on-line applications, Excel, Word, Email, or similar programs. Selection Procedure: Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum qualifications. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a referral list provided by Human Resources. Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process. Supplemental Information: Licenses and Certificates: Valid driver license is required at time of application. Valid AZ driver license is required at time of appointment. The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicant’s suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures. Failure to obtain and maintain the required licenses and certifications shall be grounds for termination. Any offer of employment resulting from this recruitment is contingent upon Fleet Services’ review and approval of the candidate’s driving record. Successful candidates will receive a post-offer, pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history. Physical/Sensory Requirements: Physical and sensory abilities will be determined by position. Working Conditions: May be subject to extremes of heat, cold, prolonged exposure to the sun, wind and inclement weather and be required to traverse long distances over difficult terrain.
