- SUMMARY
- The City of Edgewater is hiring a part-time Middle School Basketball Coach to lead practices and games for the 6th - 8th grade coed team at Jefferson Jr/Sr High School, which includes students from Jefferson Jr/Sr High, Lumberg, and Edgewater Elementary. The team competes in the JeffCo Middle School league against other Jefferson County schools.
- Practices take place at Jefferson Jr/Sr High School, with games held either there or at other county schools. The coach must work well independently, engage effectively with students ages 10 - 13, and provide excellent customer service to parents.
- This position requires 4 - 8 hours per week, depending on the schedule and number of teams. Practices and games are held after school (3:45 - 5:15 pm) two days per week (Tuesday, Wednesday, and/or Thursday). A flexible schedule is preferred. Travel to away games is required. No weekend competitions.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to the following
- · Supervise all practices and games involving Jefferson Jr/Sr High, Lumberg, and Edgewater student athletes participating through Edgewater Parks and Recreation.
- · Create age and skill appropriate practice plans.
- · Set up all necessary equipment for practices at the Jefferson High School gymnasium.
- · Attend and lead the team(s) at all scheduled games, including offsite locations.
- · Communicate clearly and promptly with the Programs Coordinator and Program Specialist.
- · Maintain a safe environment for all participants.
- · Become familiar with the Jeffco Middle School League rule book.
- · Teach and explain rules and regulations to participants and parents.
- · Maintain a positive attitude, show initiative, and work collaboratively with all staff to support a cohesive team environment.
- · Respond to accidents or incidents according to established procedures; effectively handle emergency situations involving fire alarms, CPR, and First Aid.
- · Uphold City and Department policies, procedures, and applicable laws.
- · Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
- · Participate in all required trainings and staff meetings.
- · Perform other duties as assigned by the Programs Coordinator.
- Requirements
- QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
- To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.
- 1) Must have legal authorization to work in the United States of America.
- 2) Possess a valid driver’s license with the ability to safely operate a motor vehicle, provide proof of a safe driving record, and maintain a safe driving record.
- 3) Submit and pass a pre-employment background check with Edgewater Elementary and Jefferson County Public Schools.
- 4) Must be at least sixteen (16) years of age.

- EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- · Previous experience coaching and/or refereeing youth sports, specifically basketball, preferred.
- · Has played basketball in an organized setting, preferred.
- · Basic verbal and written English language skills and grammar to reasonably communicate information with the public and/or complete relevant written documentation required by job activities.
- · Spanish language skills, preferred.
- · Excellent communication, customer service and problem-solving skills.
- · The ability to perform multiple functions at once and the ability to handle the public in a friendly and professional manner.
- CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
- · Must possess or be able to obtain First Aid, CPR and AED Certification.
- OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES
- · Comprehensive understanding of basketball gameplay, strategies, and rules.
- · Patience and demeanor required to work with young student-athletes (ages 10 -13)
- · Use of whistle.
- · Ability to stand, walk, and jog for 45 – 60 minute increments.
- · Outstanding customer service and interpersonal communication skills, to maintain effective working relationships with citizens, elected officials, appointing authorities, department heads, appointed boards, employees, and volunteers.
- · Ability to work independently.
