General Summary
- The Mechanic Intern will assist the Maintenance Department with routine and emergency maintenance on plant heavy equipment, plant vehicles, and yard equipment to support safe and reliable plant operations. This position provides a hands-on learning experience for students pursuing a career in automotive, diesel, or industrial maintenance, offering exposure to mechanical systems and maintenance processes within a power plant environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Support plant maintenance activities
- Assist in performing preventative and repair maintenance on plant heavy equipment, vehicles, and yard equipment under the direction of qualified maintenance staff.
- Learn and apply diagnostic techniques and mechanical troubleshooting to identify and resolve issues.
- Support the maintenance team with parts retrieval, organization, and documentation of maintenance tasks.
- Observe and assist with maintenance planning, scheduling, and prioritization efforts.
- Assist with vehicle and equipment upkeep
- Participate in maintaining the fleet of plant vehicles and yard equipment to ensure safety, reliability, and compliance.
- Help perform regulatory and environmental inspections of assigned equipment.
- Maintain a clean and organized workspace to promote efficiency and safety.
- Support mechanical maintenance projects (E – 15%)
- Assist with moderate mechanical maintenance activities such as lubrication, alignment, balancing, and equipment checks.
- Observe and assist experienced mechanics in performing overhauls, repairs, and component replacements.
- Gain exposure to a variety of equipment, including pumps, motors, conveyors, valves, and heavy machinery.
- Documentation and continuous improvement (E – 10%)
- Help maintain accurate maintenance records within the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
- Support documentation of maintenance activities and assist in reviewing records for accuracy and completeness.
- Participate in safety and technical training to develop knowledge and skills in plant systems, tools, and procedures.
- Requirements
- Job Criteria: Education & Experience: Must be enrolled in automotive technology, diesel technology, or an equivalent curriculum. Must have an overall GPA of at least 2.5 or greater.
- Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Knowledge of and demonstrated proficiency in plant equipment and process knowledge; specifically, heavy equipment, plant vehicles, and yard equipment.
- Knowledge and skills needed to perform all aspects of mechanical maintenance in a complex industrial electric plant, including maintenance management activities for immediate and long-term needs.
- Skills in Microsoft Office Suite and Maximo, along with other computer applications for record keeping.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex equipment and systems.
- Ability to communicate effectively and concisely both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to read and interpret vendor and manufacturer schematics and instruction manuals, plant procedures, and work practices.
- Ability to learn, interpret, and adhere to REC standards, safety procedures, regulatory and environmental compliance practices in support of REC’s safety program, environmental management system, and Rainbow Energy Center’s Mechanical safety program.
- Ability to provide job direction and project coordination for all new and existing projects.
- Ability to independently plan, organize, prioritize time, and workload to accomplish tasks.

Working conditions will be indoors and outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather conditions of extreme cold or heat. Schedules shall be any combination of eight- or ten-hour shifts. There will be occasional overnight travel, overtime and/or working weekends. This position requires the ability to sit, walk, lift up to 50 pounds occasionally. Ability to climb, balance, work at heights and work with arms above your head occasionally and/or frequently. Ability to frequently and/or occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, twist and squat, work on even and uneven surfaces. Ability to frequently stand, push, pull, carry, grasp and finger objects. Subject to frequent vibration and hazards and on occasion exposed to fumes, dust or mist. Must have vision ability to encompass close-up and distant work, and the ability to speak and hear.
