Summary
- The Yemeni American Merchants Association (YAMA) is a community-based nonprofit organization that empowers immigrant families and small business owners across New York City through education, advocacy, and community programming. As part of YAMA’s wellness and youth development initiatives, we are seeking a Martial Arts Instructor to lead classes focused on discipline, confidence, and physical well-being.
- The ideal candidate will specialize in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Taekwondo, or a similar martial art, and will have experience teaching students of varying ages and skill levels in a safe, inclusive, and motivating environment.
Job Description
- The Martial Arts Instructor will design and lead engaging martial arts classes that promote physical fitness, self-defense skills, discipline, and character development. This position plays an essential role in fostering a positive learning atmosphere where participants—particularly youth—can grow in both skill and confidence.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and conduct martial arts classes for youth and/or adults, emphasizing self-discipline, respect, and safety.
- Teach fundamental techniques and forms of Jiu-Jitsu and/or Taekwondo appropriate for beginners through intermediate students.
- Maintain class structure, discipline, and positive engagement throughout sessions.
- Ensure proper warm-up, stretching, and cooldown routines to prevent injury.
- Monitor student progress and provide constructive feedback to encourage improvement.
- Promote YAMA’s values of inclusion, community, and cultural pride within the program.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of training areas and equipment.
- Assist with program events, demonstrations, or community workshops as needed.
- Uphold a high standard of safety and professionalism in all interactions with participants.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years of martial arts teaching experience (formal or informal).
- Certification or black belt in Jiu-Jitsu, Taekwondo, or another martial arts discipline required.
- Strong communication and motivational skills; ability to work effectively with youth and adults.
- Commitment to building confidence and positive character through martial arts training.
- CPR and First Aid certification preferred (or willingness to obtain).
- Bilingual (Arabic and English) a plus.
- Experience working in a community or nonprofit setting is highly desirable.
Compensation & Benefits
- Hourly Rate: $25 – $35 per hour, based on experience and certifications.
