- Position Function - Under the direction of the Aquatics Supervisor, lifeguards are responsible for vigilantly and proactively providing support and enforcement of rules and regulations, and for the safety of the pool facility within the lifeguard certification. Lifeguards play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of all patrons in and around the aquatic facilities. Primary responsibilities include monitoring swimming activities, enforcing pool rules, and responding swiftly to any emergencies that may arise. Other responsibilities include ensuring water quality meets state and federal standards, as well as maintaining a clean and safe environment by conducting regular inspections of the pool area and equipment.
Lifeguard Job Requirements and Responsibilities
- * Performs assigned duties necessary for the safety of the guests.
- * Monitor pool activities and ensure the safety of all swimmers by detecting safety concerns and practicing preventative lifeguarding.
- * Enforce pool rules and regulations to maintain a safe environment.
- * Respond promptly to emergencies, providing first aid and CPR as needed.
- * Conduct self in a professional manner, understand, and relate to guests while using the pools.
- * Monitor and interact with guests.
- * Provide positive and enthusiastic customer service to all members and guests.
- * Patrol pool areas to maintain cleanliness and help maintain facility and equipment.
- * Perform daily maintenance duties such as setting up for daily operations, spot cleaning during shift, skimming and vacuuming pool as needed, and major clean up at the end of the day.
- * Attend mandatory meetings and in-service training as directed by the Aquatics Supervisor.
- * Work at special events and rentals, ability to work various shifts, including evenings and weekends.
- * Assist Head Lifeguard to test pool environment for proper chemical and environmental measures.
Lifeguard Qualifications / Skills
- * Knowledge of pool safety, how to be proactive about accidents and the appropriate methods and techniques for providing on-site emergency medical services.
- * Knowledge of on-site protocols, operational procedures, and safety policies.
- * Work requires the ability to read, write and comprehend instructions, correspondence and memos.
- * Work requires the ability to demonstrate professional public relations skills, effective interpersonal skills and ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
- * Ability to swim proficiently and demonstrate swimming techniques.
- * Work requires the ability to pass rescue skills and first aid proficiency test as well as swim for long distances, minimum 300 yards.
- * Work requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions, ability to deal with problems.
- * Must pass all post offer pre-employment processes and/or procedures, to include but not limited to Drug Screen, Physical Examination, and applicable Background Checks.
Education, Experience, and Licensing Requirements
- * Some High School or working towards High School diploma. Some related work experience with pool operations preferred but not required.
- * Must be 16 years of age.
- * Previous Lifeguarding experience in a recreational or community setting, preferred.
- * Possess a current American Red Cross Lifeguard, CPR, and First Aid Certification at the time of hire, preferred. If selected, successfully completed the Lifeguard Certification Course offer through The Keller Pointe prior to employment start date.
Testing Requirements
- Candidates must perform the following two (2) test successfully prior to taking the Lifeguard Certification Course at The Keller Pointe.
- Test 1: Swim Test
- Swim 50 yards continuously using front crawl and/or breaststroke (no backstroke allowed), starting in the water. Immediately tread water for 2 minutes, using only your legs (no arm sculling). Then swim another 50 yards using front crawl and/or breaststroke.
- Test 2: Timed Event
A timed event (complete within 50 seconds) that requires
- Starting in the water, swim 20 yards (face may be in or out of water; goggles not allowed).
- Surface dive feet- or head-first to retrieve a 10-lb object from 6 feet depth.
- Resurface, then swim 20 yards back (on your back) holding the object with both hands and keeping your face at or near the surface.
- Exit the water without using steps or a ladder.
