Job Description Summary Organization's Summary Statement: The Department of Residential Facilities is responsible for maintaining and providing housekeeping services for the College Park Campus's 70+ residence halls, Greek chapter houses, and recreational facilities, which encompass over 2.7 million square feet. The department employs over 300 exempt, non-exempt, and student staff. Primarily Responsibilities: The Insulation Technician position, under general supervision, is responsible for installing insulation materials in buildings and other structures to regulate temperature and sound containment. Responsible for installing, repairing, and replacing insulation materials in buildings and other structures to enhance energy efficiency, regulate temperature, and reduce noise. A driver's license with fewer than 6 points is required. Physical Demands: The incumbent will be required to work from ladders or scaffolding; to work in, on, around, over, and under fixed equipment and machinery; to manipulate heavy equipment, tools, and supplies; and/or exert force up to 70 lbs. The incumbent is required to work in hazardous or irritating environments, as well as in adverse weather or temperature conditions. They must wear and work in personal protective equipment and use ladders up to 8 feet in height. Work will involve repetitive motion. The incumbent will be required to inspect work, which may include bending, stooping, walking, and climbing. Will assist with/lead snow removal activities, which may require the use of snow removal equipment (tractors, snow blowers, shovels) and working outside in cold weather for extended periods. The incumbent will require extended hours/overtime work due to weather emergencies, scheduled openings, and closings of the residence halls. Preferences: Adept in operating, servicing, and repairing air handling and hydronic pumping systems of various designs is preferred. Has performed test and balance procedures on air and hydronic systems to determine required adjustments. Made adjustments to ensure optimal system operation is preferred. Maintained variable frequency drive applications on pumps and fans, and completed services and repairs of humidification systems utilizing steam and/or self-generated applications is preferred. Performs all duties of the Temperature Control Mechanic and HVAC Mechanic I role is preferred. Experience with insulation installation or related fields preferred. Licenses/Certifications: N/A Minimum Qualifications EDUCATION: High School Diploma EXPERIENCE: Three (3) years of experience in construction, maintenance, or trade involving the installation, repair, or replacement of insulation materials. OTHER: REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: Knowledge of insulation materials, tools, and installation techniques. Knowledge of construction and building codes related to insulation and energy efficiency. Knowledge of occupational safety standards and proper handling of insulation materials. Knowledge of measuring and cutting techniques for fitting insulation into various spaces. Knowledge of methods to prevent moisture, air leakage, and sound transmission. Skill in using hand tools and power tools for cutting, fitting, and securing insulation materials. Skill in reading and interpreting blueprints, diagrams, and work orders. Skill in identifying appropriate insulation materials for specific applications. Skill in troubleshooting and repairing damaged or improperly installed insulation. Skill in maintaining accurate records of work performed and materials used. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions. Ability to work safely in confined spaces, at heights, and under varying environmental conditions. Ability to lift, carry, and install insulation materials of varying sizes and weights. Ability to work independently or as part of a team to complete projects efficiently. Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, team members, and other trades. Ability to recognize and resolve installation problems to ensure quality and compliance with standards. OTHER: Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience, and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis, with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This position requires on-site presence. Evening and weekend work may be required on occasion. This is designated as an essential service position. The incumbent is expected to report to work as needed, including during building openings and closings, major transitions, emergencies, and inclement weather events (e.g., snow, rain/hailstorms, hurricanes). Duties may also include general maintenance and clean-up activities. Candidates selected for employment may be subject to medical inquiries and/or medical examinations to determine ability to perform the job. A non-commercial Class C or equivalent driver's license valid in the State of Maryland may be required. Candidates selected for employment may be required to be trained to work with asbestos.
