- The IBC IRE Coordinator II provides support for the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) and Institutional Review Entity (IRE). The role manages daily operations for these committees, maintains protocol records, and ensures compliance with federal policies. The specialist works closely with researchers, sponsored programs, committee chairs, and regulatory bodies to support safe conduct of life sciences research. The role also assists with training, reporting, communication, and monitoring activities tied to biosafety and biosecurity programs.
The Role
- IBC/IRE Operations Management
- Coordinate all IBC and IRE activities, including meeting scheduling, agendas, minutes, records, and follow-up actions.
- Track protocol reviews, renewals, amendments, and committee decisions.
- Ensure compliance with NIH Guidelines for rDNA research and DURC/PEPP policies.
- Maintain accurate protocol databases for both committees.
- Lead implementation of an electronic system for IBC/IRE review processes when applicable.
- Training and Education
- Develop and deliver training for researchers, staff, and committee members on IBC, DURC, and PEPP requirements.
- Assist with management of required online training modules for investigators and committee members.
- Communication and Reporting
- Serve as the liaison among investigators, sponsored programs, committee leadership, and EHS.
- Support the Institutional Contact for Dual Use Research and coordinate communication with federal agencies for DURC/PEPP-related work.
- Prepare annual reports for NIH OSP and other regulatory agencies.
- Prepare committee correspondence, reports, and memoranda.
- Conduct post-approval monitoring and laboratory inspections as needed.
- Support regulatory reporting for audits.
- Collaborate with external institutions on compliance and industry standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Our Ideal Candidate
- Associate degree or sixty credit hours from an accredited institution; or
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Microbiology, Public Health, or a related field.
- Preferred: Master’s degree or higher in biosafety, life sciences, public health, biosecurity, or a related field. Professional certification in biosafety or biosecurity (e.g., CBSP, RBP). 3 years of experience in policy implementation or research oversight including IBC.
- Skills
- Strong understanding of biological research, NIH Guidelines, DURC, and PEPP-related policies.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks with accuracy and attention to detail.
- Skill in interpreting and applying regulatory requirements.
- Ability to work effectively within a collaborative team environment.
- Typing speed of 60 wpm with 85 percent accuracy.
- Licenses/Certifications
- Preferred: Professional biosafety or biosecurity certification (CBSP, RBP)
