  • Compensation: $50,000 - $55,000 annually = $24 - $26.50/hour (DOE)

  • Dark Horse Comics is seeking an experienced, adaptable, and collaborative HR Generalist to join our team. This role is a unique opportunity to directly partner with the HR Director to deliver high-quality HR support across the employee lifecycle and operations. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in HRIS systems (Paylocity preferred), compliance, benefits administration, employee relations, and leave management (LOA/ADA). This person thrives in a collaborative environment, communicates effectively, and can balance both detail-oriented tasks and big-picture HR support.
  • Key Responsibilities
  • Employee Experience & Relations
  • Act as a first point of contact for employees regarding HR policies, benefits, and programs.
  • Support employee relations matters with professionalism, confidentiality, and fairness.
  • Partner with the HR Director to foster a positive, inclusive, and supportive workplace culture.
  • Compliance & Leave Administration
  • Alongside the Director of HR, administer and track employee leaves of absence (FMLA, OFLA, ADA, PLO, other state/federal programs).
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
  • Maintain accurate employee records (I-9s, OSHA, EEO, garnishments, unemployment).
  • Support safety and compliance programs, including training, OSHA reporting, and safety committee follow-ups.
  • HRIS & Data Management
  • Maintain accurate employee data in Paylocity (or comparable HRIS).
  • Generate HR reports and dashboards for leadership decision-making (turnover, PTO, compliance).
  • Support HRIS workflows, process improvements, and data audits.
  • Payroll Support
  • Assist with payroll preparation, including auditing timecards, reviewing payroll changes, and troubleshooting employee payroll inquiries.
  • Serve as payroll backup during the HR Director's absence.
  • Total Rewards & Benefits
  • Manage benefit enrollments, changes, and terminations (medical, dental, vision, FSA, 401k).
  • Oversee COBRA administration and compliance.
  • Reconcile benefit invoices and assist with annual open enrollment.
  • Educate employees on benefit programs and wellness initiatives.
  • Employee Lifecycle
  • Manage onboarding for new hires, ensuring a seamless transition into the organization.
  • Support offboarding processes, including exit paperwork and final pay coordination.
  • Partner with the HR Assistant on recruiting handoffs and ensure smooth candidate-to-employee transitions.
  • Events, Projects & Administrative Support
  • Assist with HR events, recognition programs, and company culture initiatives.
  • Coordinate HR vendors (benefit carriers, background checks, safety vendors, etc.).
  • Support department initiatives, audits, and special projects as assigned.
  • Other Duties
  • All other duties as assigned for the needs of the business.
  • Requirements
  • Qualifications
  • 3–5 years of progressive HR experience (Generalist or similar role).
  • Proven experience of HR compliance, LOA/ADA administration, and employee relations.
  • Proficiency in HRIS systems (Paylocity strongly preferred; other HRIS experience required).
  • Familiarity with payroll processes and willingness to serve as backup payroll administrator.
  • Experience with benefits administration and total rewards.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and critical thinking.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; able to collaborate effectively at all levels.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities with urgency, flexibility, and professionalism.
