Description of Work This position is located in the Division office in Guilford County. Candidates in this position will perform traffic engineering investigation, conduct traffic counts, delay studies, speed studies and other engineering related studies. This position will write speed ordinances for the state highway system, investigate, and recommend school zone ordinances. This position will schedule sign and marking activities, prepare collision diagrams and perform accident analyses. This position will inspect roadway modifications using micro station and other electronic programs. This position will conduct on-site meetings with citizens and gather information from phone requests. This position will maintain traffic engineering databases, coordinate and develop preliminary estimates of quantities of each project let to contract estimate unit prices of roadway items. This position will serve as an inspector for signs, and pavement marking projects. Incorporate knowledge gained by use of MUTCD, AASHTO & NCDOT standard drawings & specification to make recommendations relating to Traffic Engineering Applications. Able to utilize software applications to create documents, databases, and spreadsheets. Ability to read, interpret and explain such things as construction plans, contract provisions, specifications, and reports. Good communicative ability & supervisory ability to coordinate the activities of lower-level employees. Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC11 $43,738 - $76,542 Management prefers applicants with the following: Customer service and communication experience with the public, local government officials, field reviews, and NCDOT employees Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision Experience in reading interpreting and producing engineering plans and specifications Experience applying engineering concepts to solve complex problems Skill in use of survey equipment and skill in the use of office equipment such as calculators, and personal computers Additional Expectations: The selected candidate will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle. Safety toe shoes required. Position could require working extended daily hours, weekends, and holidays. Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
