What You'll Build
As an Engineering Manager, you'll be both a technical guide and a people leader. Your primary mission is to build the new, scalable payments and e-commerce services platform that will serve as the core engine for our 70,000+ entrepreneurs.
We are sitting on a 9-year-old, successful Ruby on Rails monolith, and this role is about building our future. This means you will be defining the strategy for how our new services will interact with, and decouple from, our existing monolith. You'll be building the bridge to our future as a true SaaS-first company.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Leading & Guiding Your Team: You'll hire, mentor, and support a dedicated team of engineers. You're not just a manager; you're a guide who can help your team navigate the complex technical problems of building new services around a mature monolith.
- Owning the API & Decoupling Strategy: You will spearhead the architecture and delivery of our new, public-facing API. This includes defining the "strangler fig" or other patterns for safely exposing and decoupling logic from our core RoR application.
- Building a Modern Auth System: You'll be central to the discussion and implementation of a new, secure authentication and authorization layer. You'll be thinking about scopes, policy management, and secure token handling from day one.
- Championing SaaS Principles: You will ensure everything your team builds is scalable, secure, and designed for a multi-tenant SaaS environment, even as it interfaces with our legacy systems.
- Delivering Value: You'll be responsible for the end-to-end delivery for your team, managing the technical roadmap and balancing immediate business goals (like Black Friday deliverables) with the long-term architectural vision.
Who you are
We're looking for someone who "understands this domain" and is excited to build it with us. We are not looking for maintainers; we are looking for builders.
- A Pragmatic Builder: You have a "builder" mentality. You see a mature monolith not as a blocker, but as a foundation to build upon. You have experience navigating the trade-offs between greenfield development and legacy integration.
- An Experienced Leader: You have a strong track record as an Engineering Manager, with proven experience in people management and a passion for developing talent.
- A SaaS & API Expert: You have deep, hands-on experience in the SaaS world. You know what it takes to build, secure, and scale a **publicly available API** and, critically, how to decouple those services from a monolith.
- Technically Grounded (with RoR): You must have a strong background in **Ruby on Rails**. While your team may build new services in other languages, you need to be able to guide engineers working with the core monolith. You also have a firm grasp of distributed systems and modern authentication technologies (including frameworks like OAuth 2.0 and standards like JWT).
- A Collaborative Partner: You're a great communicator who loves to "bounce ideas" around. You can translate complex technical concepts and partner effectively with product, business, and other engineering teams.
- Bonus Points: Experience in the payments, e-commerce, or "monetization" domain is a significant plus.
