Role Description
- You will provide employment law advice and counsel on a variety of traditional labor and employment matters, handle commercial disputes and litigation, and provide legal support in other areas of ShipBob’s business. You will play an integral role in helping to maintain and support the infrastructure necessary to support a remote-first, growing and dynamic global workforce. You will primarily work closely with the Legal, People, and Operations teams to provide legal advice across a wide range of multi-state and global issues including employee relations, wage and hour issues, workplace investigations, employee litigation, HR policy creation and implementation, restrictive covenant matters, and employee discipline. Additionally, you will work with various internal teams and stakeholders to mitigate risk, manage investigations, and resolve commercial disputes, The successful candidate will have strong commercial litigation experience and a pro-active, pragmatic, and collaborative approach to working with colleagues and external counsel to effectively and efficiently address issues. This role reports to the Associate General Counsel, Global Litigation and Employment.
What you’ll do
- Offer practical advice to the People Team on global employment matters, including recruitment, hiring, compensation, wage and hour laws, performance management, discipline, employee relations, immigration, international assignments, litigation, accommodations, leaves of absence, and terminations.
- Create and manage global employment documents and policies, such as offer letters, employment agreements, separation agreements, disciplinary letters, handbooks, code of conduct, bonus plans, compensation guidelines, summary plan descriptions, and severance programs.
- Create and deliver training related to risk mitigation, dispute resolution, and employment law matters.
- Develop and manage strategies regarding investigatory, pre-litigation and litigation matters, including both commercial and employment litigation.
- Collaborate with cross functional teams to develop risk mitigation strategies for ShipBob’s commercial legal risks related to customer disputes as well as operational and reputational risk.
- Monitor a wide range of legal and policy developments relevant to the Company, translating those developments into practical steps for the Company to implement.
- Leverage best practices and identify opportunities for efficiency and process improvements within the company.
- Other duties and responsibilities as necessary.
What you’ll bring to the table
- JD with 5+ years of relevant experience at a law firm or in-house (in-house experience not required).
- Established specialization and expertise in US labor and employment laws (preferably expertise in IL or CA laws) (experience with non-US jurisdictions preferred but not required).
- Significant experience in counseling on employment, commercial dispute, and risk mitigation related matters.
- Experience actively directing investigations, and participating in the litigation of both commercial and employment matters.
- Experience representing clients in the ecommerce space, or clients with platform-driven business models, is a plus but not required.
- Demonstrated startup initiative - ability to self-manage, find creative ways to work through barriers, actively learn necessary skills, and manage projects to completion with minimal supervision.
- Sound legal judgment, which includes understanding and effectively addressing your client’s legal needs and risks.
- Excellent written, oral, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Must be admitted and in good standing in any US jurisdiction.
- ShipBob believes in transparency while providing a competitive total compensation package with a pay for performance approach. We are targeting a salary range of $185,000 - $235,000 for this role. In addition to base salary, this role includes the opportunity to be eligible for participation in the Company's discretionary bonus plan based on Company's plans and in accordance with Company’s policies.
