  • The City of Roswell Fire Department is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented professional to join our Fire Prevention Division as an Assistant Fire Marshal. This position performs technical work in fire inspections, code enforcement, fire investigation, and public education to ensure community safety and compliance with state and local fire codes.

  • FULL DESCRIPTION
  • The Assistant Fire Marshal plays a key role in protecting life and property throughout the City of Roswell. This position conducts inspections of new, existing, and under-construction buildings and businesses to ensure compliance with applicable fire and life safety codes. The role also involves plan review, fire investigation, public education, and coordination with contractors, architects, and business owners to promote fire prevention and hazard mitigation.
  • Duties include investigating fires to determine origin and cause, preparing reports, maintaining evidence, and testifying in court when required. The Assistant Fire Marshal may respond to emergency scenes to support investigations and operations and participates in community outreach programs such as the Citizens Fire Academy, Safe Kids, and CERT.
  • This position requires strong communication skills, technical knowledge of fire codes, and a commitment to building positive relationships within the community and across City departments.

  • ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • * Conduct inspections of buildings and businesses for fire and life safety compliance.
  • * Review construction plans, specifications, and related documents for code compliance.
  • * Enforce Georgia fire safety laws and City ordinances; issue citations when necessary.
  • * Investigate fires to determine origin and cause; document and maintain evidence.
  • * Provide fire safety education to the public and civic organizations.
  • * Respond to emergency incidents as directed.
  • * Attend training to maintain required certifications and professional knowledge.
  • * Promote positive community relations through professional interaction and service.

  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • * High school diploma or GED required; associate’s degree in Fire Science or related field preferred.
  • * Three (3) years of experience in fire suppression or as a POST-certified peace officer, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • * Valid Georgia driver’s license with satisfactory MVR.

* Must obtain and maintain the following certifications within specified timeframes

  • * Georgia Fire Inspector (within 12 months)
  • * Georgia Fire Investigator I & II (within 24 months)
  • * ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800 (within 3 months)
  • * Current First Aid/CPR/AED

  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • * Knowledge of fire prevention, suppression, investigation, and code enforcement.
  • * Ability to interpret and apply state, local, and national fire safety codes and standards.
  • * Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • * Proficient with computers, inspection software, and report writing.
  • * Ability to analyze information, make sound decisions, and work independently.

  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORKING CONDITIONS
  • * Work includes both office and field duties, often in environments affected by fire, weather, or construction.
  • * Must be able to climb, crawl, kneel, and lift up to 100 pounds.
  • * May be exposed to smoke, fumes, hazardous materials, and other conditions inherent to fire prevention and investigation work.

  • COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
  • * Hiring range: $61,297 – $81,723, depending on experience and qualifications.
  • * Full range: $61,297 – $111,113.
