Job Description Summary Department - Project Design & Construction Job Description OPEN UNTIL FILLED Job Type: Classified Job Classification: 5250 - Architect I Salary Grade: 15 Pay Range Hiring Range: $68,931 - $82,721 Annually Pay Range: $68,931 - $96,512 Annually Range Explanation: Hiring Range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity. Pay Range is the entire compensation range for the position. The first review of applications will be on 09/26/2025. This position performs professional architectural work in the design and development of public works and related projects, leading large architectural projects through all phases of design and construction. This position requires registration or licensure in the United States as a professional Architect in a jurisdiction recognized by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB). Essential Functions: As defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, this classification may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. Work assignments may vary depending on the department’s need and will be communicated to the applicant or incumbent by the supervisor. Manages the design and development of construction documents for large architectural projects including coordination of full building systems and site utilities; Develops project budgets for assigned projects including multi-year budget forecasting and project cost tracking; Assists in contract development for professional services; Develops all phases of architectural systems, making final determinations as to structural requirements, type, capacity, location of equipment and permissible substitutions in project plans and specifications; Investigates and evaluates requests for large-scale departmental remodeling and reviews such requests with department personnel; Makes technical and physical surveys and compiles data for use in developing new projects; Coordinates with other departmental staff also involved in assigned projects; Describes manner in which work is to be performed, processes to be followed, precautions to be taken and any other special conditions peculiar to the project; Estimates the total hours necessary for the completion of each phase of construction; Determines quantity, types and costs of materials and equipment; Conducts periodic inspections of work in process; Makes final inspection of completed projects and authorizes their acceptance; Prepares reports; Oversees/leads and reviews the work of drafting/designer staff; Prepares construction documents in house for small to medium sized tenant improvements or small additions; Manages the pre-construction phase contracts for Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) or Design/Build Contractor. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in architecture or other related discipline as defined by the department head at the time of recruitment. Qualifying education and experience must be clearly documented in the "Education" and "Work Experience" sections of the application. Ensure the descriptions provided illustrate your competencies, specifically addressing the required and preferred qualifications.): Experience with principles and practices of architecture and project management for building design and construction administration. Experience managing building projects with construction costs usually valued at greater than $5 million dollars. Experience with communication in a written format. Experience developing and managing project budgets and schedules from preliminary scope and program information from inception through construction completion. Experience communicating and coordinating with project stakeholder groups. Experience developing scopes of work for outsourced professional design consultants and pre-construction services. Experience with building types to include office, legal and law enforcement, judicial, medical, community centers, libraries, industrial use structures, and other government building types. Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, AutoCAD 2020 (or later version), Bluebeam, or other related software. Experience with current building and accessibility codes. Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process.   Supplemental Information: Licenses and Certificates: All positions require current registration as a professional Architect. At the time of application, applicants must hold current registration as a professional Architect in a jurisdiction recognized by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB). Applicants must either already be registered as a professional Architect in the State of Arizona or obtain Arizona registration within six (6) months of appointment through reciprocity. Those registered outside an NCARB-recognized jurisdiction must complete an NCARB reciprocity review and secure Arizona registration within the same six (6) month period. Valid driver license is required at time of application. Valid AZ driver license is required at time of appointment. The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicant’s suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures. Failure to obtain and maintain the required licenses and certifications shall be grounds for termination. Any offer of employment resulting from this recruitment is contingent upon Fleet Services’ review and approval of the candidate’s driving record. Successful candidates will receive a post-offer, pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history.
